of counties south of us here in columbus that were counties called the virginia military district. after the revolutionary war, officers in the revolutionary army who didn't get paid were given land in ohio. ohio was part of the west, of course, at that time. they moved out here. they sort of carried with them their culture and their background. they came from the a slave owning state. they didn't bring slaves with them into ohio, but they were sthettic -- sympathetic to the culture. it settled from west virginia, kentucky, tennessee, the states to the south of us, the appalachian states. again, there were southern sympathies there. there was a lot of activity in the civil war pro-confederate activity in ohio. the governor of ohio declared marshall law in ohio to reign in the confederate sympathies and sympathizers here. all of that adds up to a picture after the civil war where if politicians were going to be successful statewide in ohio, they had to appeal to both people with southern sympathies and people with northern sympathies. on the northern side, the grand army of the republic,

, eight of the 10 are southern states, all but virginia in the south, all of the southern states are above the national average, some way above, with states like mississippi having over 30% living in poverty. 10 states with child poverty over 25%. nine of those are in the south. there are six million kid living in extreme poverty. that means income of less than half the federal poverty standard, and of those six million, 42% come from the south. there are 11 states with over 10% of their children living in extreme poverty, and 10 of those 11 are in the south. the pugh study, a new one, relatively new on economic mobility indicated that the lowest economic mobility in the united states is in louisiana, oklahoma, south carolina, alabama, florida, kentucky, mississippi, north carolina and texas. so this picture is pervasive. and in the south it's not getting better at the moment. the south was the only section of the country in the last census where these poverty figures got significantly worse. the next point being congenial to being concerned with poverty. this is not a southern attribute.

at an appearance in virginia. when buzz feed pressed the romney campaign about this sudden culture can war shift in the campaign, a spokesman insisted, quote, the subject has been the economy, it is the economy, and it will be the economy. so then why do you have him appearing with pat robertson? there's the issue right now of the romney campaign's focus. what issues they are trying to get people to decide the election on. but there's also the issue of the campaign's message. this very simple issue of whether or not the candidates know what to say when they are asked basic questions about what they are running on. i mean they almost accidentally started running on legalizing pot this weekend. for about 18 hours, they were running on that. conceivably, that might work, by don't think that's what they meant to do. on sunday romney went on "meet the press" and said that republicans made a big mistake when they voted in congress for the sequester. the big debt deal that entails a lot of defense cuts. mr. romney said republicans who vetoed for that made, in his words, quote, a big mistake. one of the
